Application Process

Happy Monday! We thought it would be great to start the week off with a refresher on the application process! It's a lengthy one, but we know it will help all involved!
The recent media attention has caused an influx of applications, which is incredible! More applications=more homes! The downside is that many have not reviewed the requirements for applicants, which leads to volunteer time being ineffectively used. We want to use the time of our dedicated volunteers wisely, and you can help us do so! It's a win-win...faster processing = then sooner a pooch can join your family!
We recognize and acknowledge that not all applicants will qualify, which is why we offer so many opportunities to educate applicants on the process prior to applying. We understand your time is valuable too! So help us, help you!
1. Animal health. The care of your current and past pets is absolutely the most important part of your application (if you're a first time pet owner, this will not apply). BEFORE you apply, call your vet and ensure you have everything up to date, as well as release permission. WHEN you apply, include your vets name and number. No number? No call. Make sure you've listed all dogs and cats who have lived in your house for the past 5 years. It makes us suspicious when we call and they list other animals you did not.
If your pets are not up to date on the items below, please do not apply until they are. It's frustrating for our volunteers to have to make follow up calls, follow up emails, and then more follow ups, only to find you haven't provided this care.
-For cats or dogs in the home, we require spay or neuter for pets over 6 months. We respect that some choose not to alter their pets, and that is your choice. This choice, however, as clearly stated, disqualifies you from our rescue.
-For cats in the home, we require a current wellness exam OR a current rabies. Why? Because this responsible check up ensures that your cat is healthy and happy enough to welcome a new addition. If you feel your cat is too old or to fearful to handle the stress of a 10 minute appointment, you should probably consider the stress of adding a strange new addition to your home. These brief appointments can also help catch underlying conditions that could be exacerbated or accelerated by a new addition!
-For dogs in the home, we require rabies, distemper, heartworm testing and preventative. We strongly recommend a lepto and bordetalla vaccination as well, as dogs from the south have more exposure. Heartworm testing is a MUST for southern dogs, and we appreciate seeing that you have already incorporated this care into your own dogs. Heartworm is here too, and testing and preventative purchase demonstrates proactive care. Again, please have your pet up to date on these items PRIOR to applying.
2. Background checks. As we send volunteers into your home, we expect that we can offer them reassurance of safety. If you or an adult in the home have concerning charges on your background check, we offer you the opportunity to share more about the incidents and offer your side. We all make mistakes!
3. Landlord and property managers. BEFORE you apply, talk to your landlord. Make sure you understand their policies and make sure they know you're looking to add a family member. WHEN you apply, include their name and number.
4. Complete your application with care. This seems obvious, but so many come through with incorrect emails, no non-family references, no vet telephone numbers, no landlord information, no birthdates for those in the home. Answer questions with care and double check your answers each time. Remember, this is a screenshot of what you have to offer and using answers like "common sense" or "whatever I feel like" doesn't paint a nice picture.
5. Polite follow ups are always appreciated. Emails threatening to go to a breeder, calling the requirements stupid, or telling volunteers to be more helpful and not so lazy (yes, this happens) will not make us bigger fans of your applications.
We appreciate you reading through this information! While we have never advertised our group as a "one size fits all", we have ALWAYS emphasized high standards for adopters. As a non-profit, volunteer based group, our goal is to move these animals from the worst situations to the very best! Our volunteers put in 10-70 hours a week to make Paddy's Paws possible, and we are so thankful for their time! We are equally thankful for the amazing homes our adopters provide!
Thank you for changing lives!

Hurricane Harvey Help

Thank you for the incredible outpouring of support! We have been receiving hundreds of messages asking how you can help, and hope this post will serve as a source of information! We will try to get to all messages and email inquiries individually as well! Please be patient! Please also be patient with emails about adoptable dogs and processing applications...we're doing the best we can to keep up.

It is not clear when vans will be able to get into Houston and out to bring more pooches to foster and adoptive homes. We will update on that as soon as we are able! We will also update on the need for drivers with specific departure dates and times as we have this available!

We are ALWAYS accepting foster applications. This is the same application as our adoptive application and does require all the same steps. Applications can be found at and please put "Foster" in the name of dog section.

We will also be collecting supplies at our transport facility! These supplies will be sent on a weekly basis! Collection dates will be Tuesday, September 5th and Wednesday September 6th at our facility from 9:00-12:00 and 4:00-7:00.
Transport location is W2186 State Road 106 in Jefferson, WI. This is a private property where our pooches arrive on transport Sundays! You will pull down the gravel road, and our facility will be on the righthand side.
If you are going east on Highway 106, there will be a detour as you get closer to the transport location due to construction on a bridge. You will need to turn right on Country Road D. Then turn left on Green Isle Drive which is located across from the Hebron United Methodist Church. You will then took that road until you come out by Kidd's Truck Sales. At the stop sign, you will turn right and be back on Hwy 106. We would suggest giving yourself a few extra minutes for this detour. If you are traveling west on Hwy 106, you will not need to worry about the detour.

Huge Raffle for Paddy's Paws at Bike Night!

To say we are excited about our upcoming Bike Night fundraiser on August 15th, is an understatement! We can't wait until Tuesday! We had volunteers working last night on compiling all of the generous donations from our local communities and supporters and are just in awe. Thanks to our donors...we have OVER 40 baskets just filled with fabulous items. Most baskets easily have a value over $100 or even $200! These photos only share a small portion of the baskets, so you'll have to come check it out in person!
Please help us spread the word about our fundraiser. It is rain or shine, at Boardtracker Harley Davidson in Janesville from 5-9 pm! You do not need to be present to win for our raffle basket drawing, but should be prepared to add your name and number to each ticket. We will also be having 50/50 raffles, live music, beer garden, and adorable Paddy's Paws alumni there to mingle with the crowd!

Woof, Wag, and Wood Sign Creations!

Paddy's Paws is excited to partner with Luminated Inspirations Wine & Sign to have instructor, Michelle Maurer, lead us in creating unique, personalized wood sign creations!

The cost is $50 per person, with a generous portion of that being donated to Paddy's Paws! We know the dogs will be sharing their "woofs of thanks" and "wagging their tails" for your support! There will be a variety of designs that you will be able to choose from, including non-dog related signs too. Color scheme will also be up to you! All tools, materials, and instructions for making your wood sign are included in the registration cost. This is a DIY workshop where instructor, Michelle Mauerer, will guide you step by step through the process until you have a beautiful sign to take home. You are welcome to bring your own beverages or snacks, with bottled water being provided.

Here is the registration link:

At the time of registration, you will select which wood sign design you would like to create. Keep in mind the more intricate the design and the more words, the more work this DIY project is. There will be limited spots available so we encourage you to register early. Thank you!

Did you know that Paddy's Paws doesn't keep adoption fees for the dogs we adopt out, but that we make sure to be responsible for all their vet care once they are in our program? It's true! We rely solely on donations to help with our medical bills and send all adoption fees back to Houston to aid in their rescue work!
The vet care our rescues receive is always top of line, and we wouldn't have it any other way! But...this month alone, Paddy's Paws has nearly $6,000 in vet bills...and we could use a little help!
If you're able to make a donation, no matter the size, we would be so thankful! Please help us, help them!

Zoe and Zibby

We would love for Zoe and Zibby to find their forever homes! They arrive in Wisconsin this Sunday and do not have any approved adopters meeting them. These sweet girls came from the Brenham Animal Shelter in Texas. They were there for about four weeks until they were rescued. They are playful pups who enjoy playing with their toys. We anticipate that these girls will get quite big when they are full-grown. They are very outgoing and love other dogs and people. They will be four months at their time of travel and already weigh 25 pounds. They are lab/great pyrenees mixes.

April needs our help in finding a forever home in Wisconsin where she can live out her golden years. She is a 9 year old purebred Weimaraner who is losing her home. Her previous owner had a stroke and is no longer able to care for her. April is very obedient, housetrained, and good around cats, kids, and other dogs. She would love nothing more than a person, or family, to be loyal and dedicated to...and she even can bring you the paper!

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

We've been sharing a lot of puppies available for adoption lately, but now we have a special senior girl who needs your help. Please share her story so she can have a happy-ever-after. Paddy's Paws was contacted about this sweet girl, who is a local owner surrender. For the past couple of years she had been living in a garage kennel with very little interaction or attention. She was not allowed in the house and was basically ignored. Thankfully, a neighbor intervened and offered to temporarily take Lacie until she could find a forever home where she would be appreciated. She contacted Paddy's Paws to help her. When the neighbor went to officially pick up Lacie, she discovered that a new puppy had already been bought by this family. After being disappointed by her previous humans, Lacie deserves more from life, especially as she is a senior girl who is 10-12 years. We would love for Lacie to have a chance to live out her golden years with a wonderful an indoor dog!
Lacie does well with other dogs and cats, but pays no attention to them. She had experience with both in her temporary foster home after being saved from the garage situation. She also doesn't show an interest in toys but it is probably due to the fact of never having any or no one to play with. She really seeks out the attention and love from any human who will give it to her. Lacie is very underweight (only 42lbs) and gobbles down her food as she was probably unsure when she would get her next meal in her previous situation. She is not food aggressive at all and will let you take items away from her. Her neighbor who saved her said Lacie is genuinely the sweetest dog you will ever meet and just wants love, attention, and human contact. She loves to go on car rides and does well on walks!

Paddy's Paws at Fort Farmer's Market

This Saturday, Paddy's Paws will be making their second appearance at the Fort Atkinson Farmer's Market!

At least sixteen of our foster dogs are planning to make an appearance at different times throughout the market (weather pending AND if they have not been adopted by Saturday). Please note our foster line-up can also change last minute.

We would love for you to come by our booth and say hi, learn more about our organization, or make a donation to help homeless dogs. For a $5 donation, we have our newly released Paddy's Paws window stickers! We may be selling a few other donated items to earn money to pay for our vet bills too.

Our booth is usually towards the end of the market area set-up.

*Please note that this is not an adoption event, but rather an opportunity for the general public to interact with some of our foster dogs. Approved adopters can email us at to inquire about the status of a particular dog in foster care.

Doberman Mix Puppies

These adorable puppies don't want the Wisconsin transport van to leave without them this weekend, but so far none of them have an adoptive hold. We want to try and get them more interest so they don't have to be left behind. They are Doberman mixes and mom is about 60 pounds. Dad is a mixed breed who is about 65-70 pounds. They are good with other dogs and kids!

Future Rescuers At Work!

In the past couple of weeks we've had local students doing their part to help dogs in need or educate their local communities!  We are honored that these students are doing their part and showing that everyone can make a difference no matter how young, or old, they are.

We love when kids want to make a difference! We'd like to give a special shout out to five 5th graders from Luther Elementary in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Last week, they held a fundraiser at their school for Paddy's Paws. They did a fantastic job and raised $373.70!!! Donnie, a Paddy's Paws puppy, even made a special appearance to say hi. A big thank you to these future rescuers!

We love when kids get involved and want to make a difference! The "Wildebeest" class at Kid's Safari Learning Center in Cottage Grove held a fundraiser and collected some items for our Paddy's Paws' pups and fosters. One of the teachers who had worked with the students shared that the kids are always asking about dogs and want to hear stories of saving dogs.

A young family member of one of our volunteers supplied the voice-over for a video from the  Protect Wisconsin Waterways "101" Series with a video explaining how to properly pick up after your dog.

Happy Easter!

Rowdy wants to wish everyone a Happy Easter Weekend! He'd love to see photos of what other Paddy's Paws pups are doing to celebrate this weekend. He'd also love to find his forever home! Rowdy is a handsome, 45 pound sheperd mix who is very affectionate and laid-back! He is great with other dogs, had cat experience in Houston, and enjoys lounging with his people. He has a sweet and sensitive personality so prefers the company of older children over small kids, but doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

Information about Paddy's Paws

It seems that it is time for a Paddy's Paws refresher course! We have seen a lot of negativity lately...and that is especially disheartening for those who dedicate their time and hearts to non-profit work.
Jesse is available for adoption!
1. Paddy's Paws is a 501c3 rescue partner who works to help coordinate excellent homes for homeless dogs (and sometimes cats!). We do not have any paid staff and do not have a facility where dogs are kept (we are foster based). We have 3 volunteers who monitor email and process applications. Yes, 3. And all three have full-time jobs. We receive about 300 emails, Facebook messages, or other correspondences per day. We answer them all.
We have 19 homevisit representatives for the entire state of Wisconsin. We receive around 20 applications per average day. All applications are processed in 1-2 business day (unless your vet or landlord information causes delays). We then await a homevisit representative. Remember, we have 19 for the entire state. All with full-time jobs. We can't get everywhere. We wish we could.
2. Paddy's Paws does not make money. Again, we don't have any paid staff. We send ALL adoption fees back to our Houston team members. They use this to chip away at the insurmountable debt that rescue medical causes. We fundraise for any medical needs after they arrive in Wisconsin.
3. While we do appreciate that not all folks will be able to afford the $250 adoption fee, it is important to educate on the actual costs that go into a rescue dog pre-adoption, as most people have a misunderstanding of what it costs.
Health certificate and final exam prior to travel across state lines: $45
Minimum of 2-3 weeks in foster care: $25 for food costs, $15 for kennel cost $5 for leash, collar, and tag=$45/month
Rabies vaccination and 1 round of DHLPP: $30 plus $25 office fee=$55
Microchip: $15
Second round of DHLPP: $15 plus $25 office fee =$40
Neuter with bloodwork: $105
Heartworm test $25, plus preventative $10=$35
Flea and tick meds: $5.00
2 fecal tests with dewormer: $30
Total average cost for a healthy dogs=$375 (add an extra 2 weeks quarantine and $150 for the 75% of dogs who suffer from a URI, add an extra $100-300 for those who require dentals, add $500 for a dog who needs heartworm treatment, $1,000-$5000 for those who have needed surgery, amputation)
This does NOT include puppy pads, bleach, paper towel, formula, special diets. This does NOT include costs per trip to cover travel expenses, such as gas, lodging, insurance, cleaning fees, laundry, food, etc. And again, we have no city or county funding, no shelter, no staff and all money is raised through donations.
4. We are people with big hearts. Remember that when you feel the need to criticize. Everyone in this group does this out of the kindness of their hearts, and for nothing more. Remember that we give up our time with family and friends, that we dedicate almost every weekend for transport, that we start right when we wake up and end right before we go to bed. Remember that we cry on a regular basis for the ones we cannot save, and give everything we can to the ones we do. Please. If you want something done better, offer your help. Offer your time.
5. We are making a difference. You are helping us. We thank you, our volunteers, our families, and our friends. We will rise above the negativity...and sometimes others need a gentle reminder to be kinder.
